New members and club officers were introduced

Assistant Foray Coordinator Vance Aeschleman noted the Spring Foray was scheduled for 21-22 May 2010 in Roslyn WA.  Members were encouraged to pay foray fee $12/person/night to Treasurer Melodie Gates.  Vance noted members would be advised by email of any additional day forays planned in our local area this Spring.

Club Treasurer Melodie Gates gave a report of club financial status and advised that club nametags ($6 each) and club cookbooks ($15 each and hand illustrated by club artist Joe Tillman) can be ordered by contacting her at meetings or 360-352-1851 or
melodie52@comcast.net or by mail 1631 Lana Lane SW, Tumwater, WA  98512.  Melodie was also correcting several address errors in the latest membership roster to provide accurate email distribution of newsletters and timely notification of short notice events (forays, local events, etc).  Members were also advised to visit the club website southsoundmushroomclub.com to obtain up to date information if they have not received a recent club newsletter or email.

Club President noted that Club Web Administrator Dan Steeby and Club Secretary Anna Horvath were relocating to Kentucky this month and that members were asked to volunteer for filling these vacancies.  Diane Claussen volunteered to be Club Secretary and Kathi Thompson volunteered to be Club Web Coordinator.  The club thanks Dan and Anna for their service in helping our club achieve record membership levels and for Dan’s informative hands-on mushroom growing demonstrations.

Guest speaker at the meeting was
Dr. Steve Trudell, affiliate professor in the School of Forest Resources and lecturer in the Biology Department at the University of Washington.  Steve is co-author of recently published Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest and writes for several mycological publications, and frequently serves as foray mycologist or invited lecturer for mycological societies and other nature groups. His research interests include the roles of fungi in forest nutrient cycling.  Several members purchased autographed copies of Steve’s book.  Steve’s presentation was Why Mushrooms Matter and provided excellent insights on essential fungi roles in the world’s ecosystem especially fungus roots (mycorrhiza).  Members wanting additional information on Dr Steve Trudell’s studies on mycorrhizas may visit www.mykoweb.com/articles/index/html.

A raffle was conducted to cover rental fees at our meeting location.  Club members are thanked for donating meeting raffle items.

The next meeting will be at the same time and location on April 21, 2010 with refreshments from Nancy Poultney.  Dave Yates, club member with over 30 years experience in Search and Rescue, will be presenting a lecture titled “Keeping Found and Safe” at the April meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45pm.
