Exploring Mushroom Teas

at Sizizis 11AM, Septemebr 27, 2009

South Sound Mushroom Club member and professional mushroom hunter and expert Richard Gaines lead a very interesting demonstration on the various mushrooms that can be used to make teas at Sizizis on Sunday.  All mushrooms in the demonstration were polypores, including Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), Red Belted Polypore (Fomitopsis pinicola), Artist's Conk (Ganoderma applanatum), and others.  Richard had a large collection of tea-worthy mushrooms as samples to accompany his lecture, and he demonstrated the process of cutty polypores and preparing tea.  He explained that the mushrooms used in the demonstration have a long history of medicinal use and today many are used in modern pharmaceuticals.

The event was well attended and by the time of the tasting the small tea shop was standing room only.  Richard recommended the book "Medicinal Mushrooms: An Exploration of Tradition, Healing, and Culture" by Christopher Hobbs for anyone interested in learning more on the subject.
