Do you love mushrooming AND love traveling? How about combining the two for the best of both worlds?!? Speaker Rick Steckler will present information on several different opportunities that are available for organized international mushroom travelled by expert mycologists, including: Daniel Winkler, founding owner of Mushroaming LLC and Britt Bunyard, founder and editor of Fungi Magazine. Rick will describe these programs and share his experiences and pictures of trips ranging from picking Boletes at 11,000 ft in the Himalayas in Bhutan to Chicken of the Woods in the Colombian Andes to Zombie Ant Cordyceps in the Amazon River jungle basin to mushrooms, cuisine and culture in Turkey. He’ll include general program overviews, timing, pricing and other details. Available vacation time and finances might make these type of organized trips difficult for some. To that end, Rick will also discuss some tips and tricks on incorporating self-guided mushrooming opportunities into personal trips you’re already planning.
Rick was introduced to mushroom picking at age 10 by his PSMS member parents. The bulk of his 53 years of picking experience since has been in the South Sound region, but he has also foraged in many different locations and countries. He also has a deep passion for and extensive experience in international travel. That was first kindled by attending school in Graz, Austria during college and then over a 35 year career in the beverage alcohol business, representing brands from all around the world. He sold his beer, wine and spirits wholesale distribution company in 2017 and retired, freeing up more time to pursue these passions.
